This week we gained planning permission for a new family home in an empty yard behind the busy neighbourhood high street of Lordship Lane in East Dulwich.  Double height living spaces, bedroom and workshop wings are configured around a courtyard garden.  The courtyard elevations are to made from translucent polycarbonate panels and the interiors are characterised by fair faced block, polished concrete and douglas fir ply.

JTD’s flagship annex at Wilberforce Primary School has been shortlisted for the AJ Small Project Prize, a yearly competition which champions projects with a total build cost of £250,000 or less.

The jury for the competition were certainly impressed by JTD’s submission, commenting that:

“This simple light filled structure is an exemplar of economical lean design, both the
building itself and its construction process. Thoughtful design and careful detailing
make for an elegant contemporary insertion into the school yard which does not
patronise its youthful clientele.”

This beautiful shot of the Wilberforce annex appeared on the front cover of the January 2012 edition of Architects’ Journal.

A key part of all of our projects is model-making. Here, JTD’s own Nic Howett is joined by ceramicist Isabelle Niven and the pair work through the night, laying the plaster-cast foundations for a 35kg rendition of the new annex for Wilberforce Primary School. The actual construction was completed last November.

This week saw the completion of four coloured concrete staircases in St Lukes Mews, a four-storey mews house in West London. Running from basement to top floor, the stair will now be adjoined by a perforated steel partition, casting playful shadows on the house's bright spaces as the sun moves from east to west.

Currently in planning, Unit 4 Waldo Works is a former industrial warehouse set within a row of five. The proposal to convert this building to a three-bedroom residential home will retain the original industrial features and internal height of the building, whilst the addition of external courtyard spaces will allow outside space for an otherwise landlocked building. A new rear facade will offer spectacular views across Kensal Green Cemetery.

We took this image of all the models we built this year for our Christmas card - we hope you like it.

Amongst the candles are models of new houses in London, Derbyshire and Switzerland, two school buildings in Westminster, a couple of big landscape models for our shortlisted competition entry for a new urban development in Switzerland, models of a pair of new buildings that make a public square in Folkestone and a castle in Germany.

Merry Christmas to everyone we've met and who helped us this year, see you in the New Year!

Construction of the annex at Wilberforce Primary School is complete!

The first stage of a proposed three-step project at the school, the annex constitutes a valuable addition to the campus and will become an integral part of both school and community life. We have designed the building to inspire children, with natural light streaming in through the rooflights and interesting shapes throughout.

Congratulations to the whole team on a job well done!

Design works for the castle in Saxony-Anhalt are in full swing now! We see our role as re-configuring the awkward ensemble of historically different elements and equipping the Schloss for its new role as a villa and home for the returned Von Trotha family.

JTD has been commissioned to remodel and restore the historic castle in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany to its former residential use. At present the Schloss appears to be a little shell-shocked from the collision of the later Baroque wing with the earlier elements of Old Castle. We aim to recreate the family home for as well as revealing and celebrating the history and present of the building.

Works are underway on the new annex for Wilberforce Primary School in Westminster. The new annex replaces a Portakabin that had served as temporary classrooms for nearly 20 years.

The Portakabin was craned out and has now found a new home as a holiday home on the north Welsh coast.

Shortly afterwards the Headteacher and children from class 6 signed and laid the first brick on the new annex.

Works are scheduled to take 6 months.

JTD has been invited to redesign a house/workshop space in Dulwich. The building will have a warm brutalist feeling different from the white box minimalism of the client’s previous house.
